Peer Ministry
The Peer Ministry program at St. Lawrence-Newman was established in 2000 to reach out to the students on the campus of the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities.
The program is based on the belief that students need to be invited and ministered to in their “home” environment. As with all the Church, home-based, small group faith experiences are an essential element of the faith formation of college students.
In addition, we have a great faith in the young adults’ desire and energy to grow in their personal faith life. With the Peer Ministers as co-travelers on this journey of faith, students will see that their personal hunger for growth is one shared by others on campus.
We are committed to communicating with as many students as possible the Catholic presence on campus and the invitation to join us in seeking Christ. By providing programs and presence on Campus, it is our hope they will be drawn to join the larger community of St. Lawrence Newman.
Peer Ministers do not operate in a vacuum, but are supported by the St. Lawrence-Newman staff, as well as by the entire community. They receive training and resources, as well as guidance in their ministry. It is also important to note that they come equipped with many gifts and skills, and that the most important attribute they bring is their own faith journey filled with their successes and their struggles.
While information sharing is an element of the Peer Ministers job, the most important part of their job is welcoming, listening, and helping connect the student's stories. St. Lawrence-Newman offers mini-courses and workshops to support students ongoing need for education in the Catholic faith.
The goal of the program is to be a pebble in the pond. From the Gospel to the staff to the Peer Ministers to student leaders to others, spreading the Gospel and inviting all to the table.
This year, we are proud to have 8 students answer the call to serve Catholics on campus as peer ministers. Always feel free to contact them (peers@umncatholic.org) with ideas, suggestions, or questions.
