Direct Service Opportunities

The following are some our regular service activites we do throughout the year:

• Cabrini House
• Christmas Giving Tree
• "Cooks for Kids" at the Ronald McDonald House
• Kids against Hunger
• Meals on Wheels
• Loaves and Fishes
• Youth Farm

Christmas Giving Tree

During the Christmas season, we more readily want to share the bounty which we have been blessed with. During the Advent season, we place in our Gathering Space an evergreen tree decorated with ornaments indicating gifts that would make the Christmas of someone less fortunate a little more joyous.

Look for the Giving Tree in the Gathering Space at the beginning of Advent. Call 612.331.7941 for more information about this annual service project.

"Cooks for Kids" at the Ronald McDonald House

Volunteers for "Cooks for Kids" at the Ronald McDonald House help prepare and serve a evening meal on the first Sunday of the month to families staying at the Ronald McDonald House (621 Oak St., SE across the street from the U's Super Block dormitory conplex). These are the families of children being treated for serious and often life-threatening diseases at area hospitals.

Call 612.331.7941 for more information about volunteering for this ministry.

Meals on Wheels

Ever felt lonely, forgotten, or hungry? Sometimes that's what happens to our elderly neighbors if we don't take extra care to makes sure they are visited and fed on a regular basis.

Every seven weeks, our parish covers folks for an entire week. You can volunteer to bring a pre-prepared hot meal to a few people on a neighborhood route. You provide not only a meal, but also contact with the outside world for these individuals that may be homebound.

Contact Rebekah Solheim at 612.331.7941 for more information about volunteering for this ministry.

Loaves and Fishes Ministry

Here's a simple opportunity to serve others – and it doesn't cost you anything but a little bit of your time and energy. Feeding the hungry is one of the acts Christ asked us to do.

Six times a year St. Lawrence-Newman community members (including students) prepare and serve a meal for the over 300 homeless and underprivileged at St. Stephen's School (2111 Clinton Ave., S). This happens on the fourth Tuesday of every other month. Cooking begins at 2 pm, serving is at 5 pm, and clean up is finished by 7 pm—you can volunteer as much time and duties as your schedule allows.

On the Sunday before the Tuesday St. Lawrence-Newman is scheduled to prepare and serve a meal there is a sign-up sheet and traveling directions available on the table in the Gathering Space. Or you can call 612.331.7941 for more information.
